Distribution & locality

Eastern half of the USA and Canada. Occasionally introduced to waterbodies in the western USA as well.

Natural history
  • Habitat: Freshwater, on host or hard surfaces
  • Host/feeding: Parasite of a variety of turtle species
  • Reproduction: With parental care, as in all Glossiphoniids

External Morphology

Diagnostics & field ID

Highly variable in pigmentation but often with 8-12 brown or green wavy stripes, dorsum relatively smooth or with numerous small sensilla. No supplementary eyes as in Placobdella hollensis, which can otherwise resemble this species.
